Horsham Matters and Horsham Churches Together are working  to provide a Night Shelter from December 2012 to February 2013 inclusive.

There are a good number of people who 'sofa surf', relying on a friend letting them stay and when they can't find somewhere they end up outside. There are a few people who are longer term homeless.

The plan is for a church/couple of churches to cover one night of the week for the three months that the shelter will be open.

(e.g. A church could choose Friday as it's preferred day). A Church Co-ordinator is need for each church group. This person will liaise with the Project Co-ordinator and be responsible for organising and mobilising the volunteers in their church.

The Training Day for volunteers will be on Saturday 24th November 2012
from 10:30am to 3:30pm at Brighton Road Baptist Church.

Guests will be assessed and if they meet the pre-defined criteria will be allocated a bed, Only people with beds already assigned will be expected at registration time.

Guests will be permitted to stay for a maximum of 28 days; during which HCT will work with other agencies in an attempt to find permanent housing for them.

The tentative timetable for a night is:

  • 7:00 pm arrival and registration
  • 7:30 pm meal
  • 11:00 pm lights out
  • 7:00 am breakfast
  • 8:00 am departure of guests and finish clearing up.

A minimum of 10 volunteers are needed to run the evening:

  • some helping with the set-up and meal,
  • 3 sleeping over,
  • some helping with breakfast and clearing up.

So jobs can be allocated based on capability and availability.
